POSITION ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

MEDIA PREP/RESEARCH TECHNICIAN

PDF Position Announcement

This position will primarily perform functions in the media preparation area which requires a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail. Additional duties include performing research experiments and tracking data regarding plant performance under varying conditions.

ORGANIZATIONAL FIT:  Position directly reports to the Lab Manager and may take direction and instruction from lead staff. Works closely with other lab employees. May work with other departments in the nursery.

RESPONSIBILITIES: (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Assists computer and technology users with IT issues and requests on a timely basis. Provides a high level of customer service.
  • Prepare culture media exactly to defined protocols and schedules while monitor prepared media for contamination watching for small deviations in culture performance.
  • Use good laboratory practices for safely measuring and handling chemicals.
  • Setup research experiments and record observations and final results.
  • Perform work required to start experiments in laminar flow hood.
  • Update plant handling protocols based on research results.
  • Work around hot equipment (hot plates, autoclave).
  • Use sterile technique to pour media into sterile containers. 
  • Maintain clean work areas and equipment in good working order based on maintenance and cleaning schedules.
  • Maintains accurate inventory of available supplies and prepared media. Assists with monitoring supply levels.
  • Operates equipment including digital scales, balances, pH and conductivity meters and autoclaves.
  • Perform work in a safe and efficient manner following and ensuring strict safety procedures and safety checks.
  • Cross train with other positions in the lab.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND TRAINING:

  • Typically requires some college education with courses in math, science and chemistry.
  • High attention to detail- the ability to observe small deviations. 
  • Must be able to read and follow detailed instructions, directions, recipes and protocols in English. 
  • Strong math skills, preferably at the algebra level.
  • Highly organized in handling materials, equipment and supplies.
  • Ability to work in a clean environment with limited access to the outdoors.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and printing reports.
  • Self-directed and capable of prioritizing daily work according to a schedule.
  • Ability to interact effectively with a wide spectrum of people.
  • Position requires regular attendance at the primary place of business.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Bachelor’s degree in biological sciences.
  • Experience working in a biology laboratory setting.
  • History of designing, recording and analyzing experimental data.
  • Experience using statistical software (R, DesignExpert).
  • Knowledge of laboratory terminology and equipment.
  • Familiarity with weighing and measuring in a laboratory setting.

IT SUPPORT TECHNICIAN

PDF Position Announcement

This position provides IT support to the computer and technology users in the company. The IT Support Technician reports to the IT Manager and provides support to remote and on-site users.

JOB SETTING:  Office setting. Some travel may be required.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES: (Other duties may be assigned)

  • Assists computer and technology users with IT issues and requests on a timely basis. Provides a high level of customer service.
  • Responsible for providing general maintenance and troubleshooting for all network workstations and peripherals.
  • Responsible for hardware and software installation, maintenance and troubleshooting. Installs components such as memory, video cards, etc.
  • Installs and troubleshoots workstation operating systems.
  • Assists in maintaining and troubleshooting phone system, including setting up users and answering questions.
  • Maintains the Microsoft Office 365 Suite of programs.
  • Troubleshoots network printing devices (all-in-one’s, local personal printers, networked work center printers).
  • Works with Internet browsers and corrects compatibility issues, settings, etc.
  • Provides Smart Phone and tablet technical support.
  • Assists with updating, maintaining and troubleshooting network servers, routers, and switches as directed.
  • Performs onboard training for new hires and ongoing staff training as directed by IT Manager.
  • Properly documents support, repair, and project activities using the helpdesk ticketing system.
  • Maintains and updates the computer asset log. Responsible for the timely resolution of issues and requests.
  • Provide support for company SAAS programs and acts as technical liaison for upgrades, etc.  Keeps the IT Manager informed of any major issues or concerns in a timely manner.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND TRAINING

  • Typically requires an Associate’s degree in Information Systems or related field, or certified course work and 1+ year experience in a similar position providing help desk work or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Demonstrated technical competence via other on-the-job training or coursework.
  • Ability to analyze information and diagnose situations and configurations to maximize the functionality of hardware and software systems.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively present information in formal and informal settings.  Must have the ability to communicate effectively and project a professional image when giving and taking information in writing, in person, through email, and over the phone. Must communicate in an open, honest, and complete manner.
  • Ability to take initiative and prioritize tasks; excellent time management, organizational, problem-prevention, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and ability to actively listen.

PLANT NURSERY MANAGER (FARM MANAGER)

PDF Position Announcement

This position is responsible for managing nursery operations which includes plant production, crop maintenance, and preparing our plants for shipment.  The Farm Manager supervises a production staff and creates a collaborative and safe work environment.

JOB SETTING:  Field, office and nursery setting.  Domestic travel required. Some international travel may be required.

RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned) 

  • Responsible for managing operations at the assigned nursery. This includes but is not limited to plant production, crop maintenance, and supervising labor.
  • Manages the potting operations. This includes ensuring targets are met, assisting in getting all materials needed for planting, and overseeing the correct layout of plants.
  • Assists with developing the department budget and operating within the approved amounts.
  • Maintains inventory of all production supplies at the assigned nursery and reports information to the inventory department.
  • Works closely with the order fulfillment department to ensure complete and accurate orders.
  • Ensures that staffing levels are adequate to meet the production plan at the nursery.
  • Coaches and develops employees. Sets performance goals and objectives, creates development plans and conducts timely performance appraisals.
  • Develops, supports and recommends continuous improvements in efficiencies, mechanization, innovation, and product quality.
  • Teams with other supervisors and managers to coordinate the utilization of equipment, labor, and facilities.
  • Conducts and participates in meetings. May attend trade shows and conferences to learn about new industry trends and vendors.

  • Requires 3+ year’s production manufacturing experience preferably working in a wholesale nursery environment, with both container and field production.
  • Requires 1+ year’s supervisory or leadership experience with direct responsibility for managing and developing staff.
  • Knowledge of and experience working with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to collaborate with other team members, develop strong relationships, and maintain a positive attitude. Must be able to exercise good judgment and positively influence team decision-making.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to effectively present information in formal and informal settings.
  • Ability to develop clear action plans and drive processes with many interdependencies.

ASSISTANT PROPAGATION MANAGER

PDF Position Announcement

The Assistant Propagation Manager is responsible for implementing the transplanting, fertilizing, irrigation, storage and shipment plans for the propagation plants. This position is also responsible for supporting the day to day operations of the department including employee supervision and development. This position requires a high degree of independent professional judgment in decision making, forecasting, and problem solving.

RESPONSIBILITIES (Other duties may be assigned) 

  • Under direction, responsible for managing the transplanting, fertilizing, irrigation, storage and shipment of plants in propagation. Implements fertilizer and pesticide schedules as directed.
  • Supervises the transplanting, flat filling, fertilizing, and any tasks necessary to prepare rooted cuttings and plants for immediate sale or to send on to the second year crop program.
  • Responsible for scouting the tissue culture plants, hardwoods, softwood crops and foundation house for pests, overall crop health and anomalies. 
  • Ensures irrigation (misting, fogging, micro-irrigation) to ensure that optimum environments exist in the greenhouses for the rooting of hardwood, softwood, and unrooted micro cuttings.
  • Recommends new and improved propagation methods to the manager. 
  • Communicates the production numbers to the Assistant Propagator. Provides production analysis as needed.
  • Assists with budgeting and monthly forecasting for the inventory and purchasing function.
  • Supervises, develops and coaches department personnel. Sets performance goals and objectives, development plans and conducts timely performance appraisals.
  • Supervises the Team Leaders and apportions work to multiple crews involved in planting microcuttings, propagating hard and softwood cuttings, irrigating, fertilizing, transplanting, and any other task needed in the area of first year production and propagation.  
  • Plans the work crew schedules and determine the techniques and supplies to be used. Reviews and approves time worked for the propagation workers.
  • Directs and coordinates staff in the preparation of domestic and international TC0 shipments.
  • Coordinates temporary labor needs with outside contractors.
  • Tracks and maintains TC plant inventory. Coordinates the labor needed for inventory counts.
  • Attends department meetings and participates in other meetings on a monthly basis. 
  • Assists with after-hours events such as weather related issues, power outages, and other emergencies as needed.
  • Attends meetings, trade shows, and conferences to learn about new industry trends and make contacts with vendors.
  • Ensures that the work performed is conducted in a safe, efficient manner.

  • Requires 3+ years’ experience in a supervisory role with direct responsibility for managing and developing staff.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills at all levels of the organization.
