New Variety Introductions

Spanish Varieties Brochure PDF

We're very proud of our variety development research at Fall Creek.  With more than 30 years in the industry and a long history of working with commercial fruit growers worldwide, we have a deep understanding of the needs of growers.  We maintain strong ties to the fresh, frozen and processed blueberry marketplace, too. We're keenly aware of the market demands and trends that affect growers around the globe.

Our unparalleled perspective benefits our own breeding program and others we work closely with as we work to bring varieties forward that meet the needs of growers and the industry alike. The Fall Creek Variety Solutions section of our website will provide more insight into our breeding program.

This page highlights the varieties new to Fall Creek’s portfolio from our trusted University licensor partners as well as our own program in the future. Fall Creek is trialing many of these selections at our Global Trial Network and will include initial evaluations on this page.  Keep in mind that initial production quantities of these new releases will be limited so contact our sales team early with order inquiries.

Blue Ribbon

Aptly named Blue Ribbon for its exceptionally flavorful fruit, this variety also offers some of the highest yields and excellent post-harvest shelf life. Blue Ribbon was one of the highest yielding varieties in 2010, 2011 and 2012 at Fall Creek's research farm. This early to mid-season Northern Highbush variety was released primarily for the hand-harvest, fresh market. Its berries are easy to access and ripen through multiple pickings.

     High Chill (800-1000 hours)
     Early/Mid-Season Fruiting
     Light Blue, Sweet, Fruity

The fruit is well-suited to hand harvest but may also be a great choice for mechanical harvest as well. Top Shelf looks to be a mid-chill variety and could be well-suited for areas such as Northern California and North Carolina. Top Shelf is easy-to-prune and offers sturdy upright growth.

Top Shelf Characteristics:

     Northern Highbush
     High Chill (800-1000 hours)

Cargo offers excellent machine harvest characteristics including a narrow crown, upright habit and easy-release berries. Initial tests show the fruit maintains flavor and firmness throughout cold storage which is good for fresh market and it may also be well-suited to IQF as well.

     Northern Highbush
     High Chill (800-1000 hours)
     Late-Season Fruiting

Clockwork

Clockwork shows great promise as a machine-harvestable blueberry for the processed market. This mid-season Northern Highbush variety offers a highly concentrated ripening and a bush shape (upright growth and narrow crown) that is ideal for machine harvesting. When fully ripe, Clockwork has very high brix and an intense aromatic flavor. Clockwork may be a great candidate for the IQF market because of its exceptional flavor and texture retention after thawing.

Clockwork Characteristics:

     Northern Highbush
     Mid-Season Fruiting
     Medium Blue, Intense Berry Flavor
     Firm, Medium-Sized Berry
Growth Habit: Upright Growth, Narrow Crown

Last Call

Last Call, a very late season Northern Highbush, ripens in the same window as 'Aurora' and 'Elliott.' Intended mainly for commercial fresh production in the high value late season market, this vigorous, upright bush produces high yields of large meaty berries with a 'classic' blueberry, slightly aromatic flavor. It's also recommended for processed fruit or local market growers wanting to extend their harvest season.

"Last Call is a real horse of a plant and the berries were consistently preferred in blind taste tests among our employees. I especially like the texture of the berry, and the large berries look great in the fruit lug after harvest."  - Peter Boches

Last Call Characteristics:

     Northern Highbush
     Very Late Season Fruiting
     Light Blue, 'Classic' Blueberry Flavor
     Meaty, Large-Sized Berry
